Therapy Insights: Gentle Reminders from the Therapy Room

These are just a few reminders that have come up in recent sessions. If something resonates—take it with you. If it doesn’t, that’s okay too!

As a therapist, I often find myself repeating certain themes to clients navigating very different situations. These reminders aren’t universal truths—but they often bring comfort, clarity, and validation to those who need it.  Whether you’re in a season of growth, grief, transition, or uncertainty, I hope some of these insights from recent sessions speak to you too: 

You’re allowed to rewrite your timeline.

Life rarely unfolds in the order we expect. Maybe you’re entering a new career at 35, or just starting to prioritize your mental health after years of burnout. Wherever you are now is valid. You’re not behind, you just are at a different point on your timeline than you thought you would be, and that’s okay.  You’re growing—and that’s enough.

Asking for help doesn’t make you a bad parent.

Delegating (to your husband, partner, or support system) is okay. You’re allowed to share responsibilities, especially when it comes to parenting. You’re not supposed to carry it all, remember the saying: “It takes a village.”

Use your support system.

Have you been utilizing your support system? Sometimes we forget that asking for help or leaning on those who care is a strength, not a weakness. Connection is a lifeline when we’re spiraling or stuck.

It’s okay to protect your energy.

That friend who drains you? You’re allowed to take space. Not all friendships are meant to last forever—and some shift into something different over time. Re-evaluating and setting boundaries doesn’t make you heartless—it protects your peace.

Small gratitude can make a big shift.

Gratitude doesn’t have to mean celebrating huge wins. Sometimes, it’s as simple as acknowledging the comfort of a stocked fridge, a warm bed, or quiet mornings. These small reminders can help ground us when everything feels like too much.

Boundaries are a form of self-respect.

You’re not cruel for limiting contact with someone who has harmed you—even if they’re family. Especially when it comes to complex dynamics with parents or caregivers, setting firm boundaries is often the most compassionate thing you can do… for both of you.

You don’t have to be pulled into other people’s chaos.

Someone else’s emotional storm doesn’t have to sweep you up. Let them make a big deal about it. You don’t have to engage. Sometimes, the healthiest choice is to not react and instead return to your own peace.

Messing up doesn’t make you less capable.

You’ve handled so much already—but even the most capable people mess up, feel lost, or need to begin again. When that happens, can you offer yourself the same grace you would give a friend? Let’s start practicing that kind of self-compassion more often.
